Three things to be never to be ignored in hydroponics....

With all that’s going on in the world – we all are at home more often. We are seeing more people using hydroponics – to grow their own fruits and vegetables from the comfort of your own home. Today we will look at the advantages of soilless hydroponics and how simple it is as long as you observe and monitor three elements: pH range, EC range & nutrient tank/reservoir temperature. I say three things as I am assuming that your grow environment is already in check- (visit here to assist with this).

What pH, EC and nutrient water temperature should be aiming for?

The pH of your nutrient solution will vary depending on what fruit, vegetable, flower, or herb you’re growing. We say aim for anything in the pH range of 5.5 to 6.5 – and you will be on target. Make sure you have a pH meter.

When it comes to monitoring your nutrient solution tank EC range - we would advise to aim for the below ranges – and always look at your plants checking leaves and stems for signs of over and underfeeding.

  • 0.5-1.3 for clones
  • 0.8-1.3 for seedlings
  • 1.3-1.7 under vegetative phase
  • 1.2-2 during flowering phase

The optimum water temperature range for your hydroponic nutrient solution should be keep within a range of 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit (20 to 22 Celsius). Remember to ensure no light reaches your nutrient tank as this will encourage algae growth – which will then compete with your plants for the nutrients ...not what we want. If you can keep these three elements in check and your environment right - your in for some serious harvest - using Deep Water Culture (DWC), Flood & Drain or NFT systems.

Soilless hydroponics gives you a precise method for delivering water, nutrients, and oxygen to your plants’ roots which leads to - bigger yields & faster plant growth. You will need to invest in a pH meter, EC Meter and a nutrient tank heater - which you can preset to maintain the nutrient solution temperature.
